Professionals and students continue strike in New Delhi

Sunday, May 21, 2006

New Delhi — Almost 10,000 people marched to Jantar Mantar from Maulana Azad Medical College in an anti-reservation rally on Saturday. Doctors and medical students say they will continue to strike and protest, despite an appeal from the prime minister to call off their agitation.

Students from Delhi University and medical colleges around the capital, parents, lawyers, and accountants joined the striking medicos, under the banner of ‘Youth for Equality’.

The students and their supporters want total rollback of a proposed quota-hike for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in elite educational institutions, and a review of the present reservation policy. “There are very less seats in the post-graduate streams compared to the undergraduate courses. Hence the reservation move will affect the future of majority students,” said student leader Praful Raj.

The students have support from many groups. They were led by the Youth for Equality, an AIIMS initiative, while United Students, a DU and JNU group, IIT alumni, RWAs (under the banner of United Residents Joint Action), Resident Doctors Associations from various government and private hospitals, Chartered Accountant’s Association, students from private universities like IP, and parents of agitating students also joined in.

Students from medical colleges in Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab and Karnataka also took part in the rally. Students and doctors say the government has showed “scant regard to the sentiments of the students”, who have been protesting the proposed quota-hike for OBCs in elite educational institutions.

The students had appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to set up a non-political judicial committee to review the existing reservation policy and sought an audience with him to discuss the issue.

Bush’s Katrina statement contradicted by emerging evidence

Bush’s Katrina statement contradicted by emerging evidence

Thursday, March 2, 2006

Recently emerging evidence seems to contradict a statement by United States President George W. Bush during Hurricane Katrina. He stated in an interview with ABC on September 1st that, “I don’t think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees”.

One of the first items to emerge, a video obtained by the Associated Press, shows footage of Bush during a video-conference received at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, on August 29, 2005, 19 hours before landfall of Hurricane Katrina. During the briefing, Director of the National Hurricane Center Max Mayfield warned, “I don’t think anyone can tell you with any confidence right now whether levees will be topped or not, but there is obviously a very, very great concern”.

In addition, Michael D. Brown, then director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), reported that he had spoken with President Bush twice in the morning and that the president was asking about reports that the levees had been breached.

Brown would state later on CNN that, “There’s no question in my mind he probably had those reports (about breaches in the levees), because we were feeding in the Homeland Security Operations Center, into the White House sit room, all of the information that we were getting. So he had to have had that information. Plus, I think the president knew from our earlier conversations that that was one of my concerns, that the levees could actually breach”.[1]

In July 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency completed an exercise called “Hurricane Pam”, which, dealt with the scenario of a direct hit on New Orleans by a hurricane with 120 mph winds (a Category 3). It resulted in “10 to 20 feet of water within the City of New Orleans,” according to January 24 congressional testimony by the president of the company that designed the Hurricane Pam exercise.[2]

A report FEMA sent to the White House Situation Room on August 29th, they cited death and destruction anticipated by the “Hurricane Pam” exercise and warned that Katrina was likely to be worse. “Exercise projection is exceeded by Hurricane Katrina real-life impacts,” they stated. Furthermore, “The potential for severe storm surge to overwhelm Lake Pontchartrain levees is the greatest concern for New Orleans. Any storm rated Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson (hurricane) scale will likely lead to severe flooding and/or levee breaching. This could leave the New Orleans metro area submerged for weeks or months”.[3]

When the report was released, Hurricane Katrina was thought to be a Category 4 as of landfall (though after analysis, it’s power at landfall would be downgraded to a Category 3).[4]

White House officials previously clarified Bush’s earlier comment, saying that the president was referring to the hours after Katrina swept through and news reports as of August 30th suggested the city had “dodged a bullet”, which led to surprise when reports reached them of the levee breaches.[5][6] Contrasting this was the August 30th broadcast of NBC’s Today, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams reported at 7:05 a.m. ET, “There has been a huge development overnight … the historic French Quarter, dry last night and it is now filling with water. This is water from nearby Lake Pontchartrain; the levees failed overnight.”[7]

BC design club president comments on Olympic mascots; sales brisk">
BC design club president comments on Olympic mascots; sales brisk

Wednesday, December 5, 2007

Wikinews recently spoke with Mark Busse, president of the BC Chapter of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, to find out what his organization’s views are of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic mascots, Miga, Quatchi, and Sumi.

Many people love them. Obviously some don’t. Kids seem to adore them. But as a professional designer, I am trying to keep an open mind and try to consider the big picture and audience before judging them too quickly.

The mascot design was a very difficult problem for the VANOC 2010 planning committee — and a very important project with lots at stake. Unlike during the original logo competition, VANOC chose to not engage in an open, speculative contest, but rather came to the Society of Graphic Designers for assistance and guidance, followed our recommendations and engaged in a thorough, thoughtful, fair and comprehensive design competition and process. They had our full cooperation and support and we encouraged all GDC members to participate.

I would have likely designed something different, although I had suggested using BC mythology, such as a Sasquatch, to capture the imagination of a predominantly young international audience. But I think the result of VANOC’s careful design process is a solution that captured BC’s spirit, culture, attitude, geography, wildlife, athleticism — even mythology — in a clever and friendly way. Quatchi, Miga and Sumi are respectful of BC aboriginal heritage without alienating all Canadians.

While the products at HBC stores of the mascots have been flying off the shelves, many have bashed the designs for having “too much” of a Japanese influence. As of 2001, 1.5% of Vancouverites were Japanese heritage, and 29.9% were of Chinese descent. Vancouver’s Chinatown is one of the largest historic Chinatowns in North America, and Japan has had diplomatic relations with the city since 1930.

This is the first time the Olympic and Paralympic mascots have been unveiled at the same time.

Busse is also a partner and the design director at Industrial Brand Creative, a design firm in the province. He is co-chair of Graphex ’08, a design exhibition at the Emily Carr Institute, which “showcases the best cultural, social and business communications in Canada.”

Saudi Arabia plans to open embassy in Finland">
Saudi Arabia plans to open embassy in Finland

Saturday, October 20, 2007

It has been announced that Saudi Arabia is planning to open an official embassy in Finland, to signify continuing improvement in relations between the two countries.

Teemu Tanner, director general of Africa and the Middle East at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, said to reporters concerning Finnish President Tarja Halonen’s first visit to Saudi Arabia on Sunday, “One indication of this visit is that you (Saudi Arabia) are planning to open an embassy here in Helsinki,” adding that “We regard this as extremely important for relations,” and that it is only a matter of time before the facility is made available.

Another act set to strengthen diplomatic relations is the planned visit of a trade delegation headed by Saudi Minister of Trade and Commerce Hashim Yamani, which will arrive in Finland next month.

“Our relationship is no longer in relation to trade,” said Tanner. “More broadly, we will discuss regional and global issues. It is extremely important for us to know Saudi Arabia’s views on Iraq, Iran, but also issues such as Somalia… One objective of the visit is to convey notes on international questions, as we enter a very interesting phase in the Middle East peace process,” adding that the presidential visit is a relational “landmark” that will “crystallize” Finland’s image to Saudi Arabia.

Despite the comment that the international cooperation is no longer entirely a trade issue, he did point out Saudi Arabia’s important role in the Finnish economy as one of the five largest importers of Finnish products. Finland’s main exports to Saudi Arabia are mobile phones, paper, wood and machinery, while Saudi Arabia exports large quantities of raw materials for use in manufacturing plastics. The total volume if this trade is estimated to be worth over €840 million.

Other topics on the table for the two nations to discuss during Halonen’s visit include energy, the role of science, environmental issues and combating terrorism, as well as other global issues. Tanner has also suggested tourism may be a future area of attention, with a possibility of package holidays for Finnish tourists being organized to Saudi Arabia.

Finland and Saudi Arabia have been officially involved in diplomatic relations since 1969. Finland has maintained an embassy in Saudi Arabia since 1974.

The Depth Of An Evergreen Trees Roots}

Submitted by: Patrick Desnoyers

The evergreen tree is one of the most popular trees that are used in home landscaping. An evergreen tree is a symbol of beauty and simplicity. The evergreen tree provides the winter landscape with color even during the coldest of months. Many homeowners love to have evergreens as part of their landscaping. This is because the evergreen tree is not only beautiful but the shrub that is part of the species of evergreen is a perfect privacy hedge. This is a gorgeous way to ensure privacy while in your yard. There are many practical and decorative purposes of the evergreen tree.

Species of the evergreen tree include white fir, techny, smaragd, blue dwarf, and rocky mountain fir, Douglas fir, rocky mountain juniper and many more. Each separate type of evergreen tree requires different environmental factors in order to grow healthy and strong. When each the environmental factors is ideal such as soil, sunlight, climate and temperature then the evergreen tree will plant deep roots and grow relatively fast. The lifespan of a healthy evergreen tree can range from two to seventeen years depending on the species of evergreen tree.

Before an evergreen tree is planted it is very important that one calls the utility companies in order to mark the exact location of any underground lines. This will avoid damaging the lines when planting an evergreen tree. One wants to prepare the soil before planting the soil. To prepare the soil add organic materials such as peat moss, aged manure, compost, shredded leaves and sphagnum. The organic materials should be a one to three inch layer around the planting area.

The home gardener may want to extend the planting area of the evergreen tree by several feet in each direction from the planting spot. Rototill or spade the organic materials into the soil. After this last step has been completed make sure to dig ten to twelve inches deep before planting. A variety of evergreen tree can be planted together as long as there is adequate space. After all of these steps have been completed the evergreen tree can be planted. As the evergreen tree grows the root structure will become deeper and more complex.

The evergreen tree is most commonly found in the eastern part of the United States but there are certain types of evergreen species that are native to the western United States. If you wish to invest in evergreen trees you want to make sure that you choose an evergreen species that is appropriate for the environment. For example a western evergreen tree would have trouble in the east.

Many people do not know that most Christmas trees are a type of evergreen species. This is just one fun fact of evergreen trees. The evergreen tree is a wonderful addition to any home. If you want more privacy and want to increase the value of your backyard you may want to consider investing in evergreen trees. Evergreen trees are a terrific investment that adds beauty and grace to a home.

British Sweets Vs. American Sweets

By Ben Greenwood

British people are renowned for their sweet tooth, and this is reflected in the sheer amount of sweets produced and sold in the UK. From hard-boiled classics such as the Mint Humbug to the huge range of chocolate products on our supermarket shelves, the Great British public are spoilt for choice when it comes to satisfying our confectionary cravings.

However, with American popular culture arguably influencing our own culture more than ever, American sweets have slowly worked their way into the public conscience. The Twinkie and the Oreo have become household names, despite not always being available in the usual grocery shopping locations.

Whereas getting your hands on the best the US has to offer would have previously involved going on a costly holiday and physically going to an American grocery store, American sweets are now easily available in most department stores and through specialist online retailers.

You say candy, I say sweets

YouTube Preview Image

Ask anyone about traditional British sweets, and the chances are they will reflect on times gone by. The rustic hard-boiled offerings of yesteryear are associated with the age of the sweet shop, where children would have jars upon jars of various wonders to choose from. This tradition has somewhat fallen by the wayside, with the most popular sweets largely originating overseas – the Haribo range providing a particularly apt example.

American sweets stand out for the sheer amount of flavours and types of sweet on offer, with American confectioners embracing all sorts of weird and wonderful tastes. Brands such as Jolly Rancher offer an immense range of products and flavours, from tropical fruit chews to cinnamon-flavoured hard candy. With the ever-popular peanut butter-based Reese’s brand and even more variations on sweets already popular in the UK such as Skittles, American sweets should be the choice of any candy connoisseur looking for something a bit different.

Cakes and biscuits

Baked goods are an area in which British food manufacturers really come into their own, with staples such as the iced bun and the gingerbread man as popular as ever. Biscuits are another British strongpoint, illustrated by the diverse range on offer on most supermarket shelves.

The appeal of American cakes and biscuits, similar to their candy offerings, lies in the diversity of their goods. Cakes such as Suzy-Q’s, Ho-Ho’s, Zingers and, of course, the Twinkie are cream-filled taste sensations, and offer us the chance to finally sample some of the exotic-sounding goods so beloved by our favourite US TV characters.

American biscuits are undoubtedly the most successful of America’s confectionery imports, with Oreos taking their rightful place alongside the Custard Cream, the Digestive and the Bourbon in the hearts and stomachs of British biscuit aficionados.

However, the plain old Oreo cookies on offer on our own shelves are just the tip of the biscuit iceberg. In the US, the Oreo is a phenomenon, with variations including peanut-butter fillings, brownies and Golden biscuit layers rather than traditional chocolate. These alternative takes on Oreos should be considered essential purchases for anyone who loves their cookies.

British sweets and cakes are amongst some of the best in the world, and are rightfully amongst some of the best-selling foodstuffs in the country. However, whilst sticking to what you know is natural (especially if what you know is as delicious as some British sweets!), American sweets are now easier than ever to get hold of, and as shown in this article, offer a real smorgasbord of flavours and textures. For this reason, true confectionary fans should definitely consider exploring some of the weird and wonderful tastes on offer across the pond.

Tomb discovered in Valley of the Kings">
Tomb discovered in Valley of the Kings

Friday, February 10, 2006

Archaeologists have discovered a tomb, referred to as KV63, in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings. It is the first such discovery since Howard Carter’s 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun‘s tomb. The discovery was made by a team from the University of Memphis. Zahi Hawass, head of the Supreme Council of Antiquities said in a statement that five intact sarcophagi that all contained mummies and 20 large storage jars that were sealed with pharaonic seals had been recovered.

American archaeologist Kent Weeks, who was not part of the team but had seen photographs of the site, told the Associated Press that “It could be the tomb of a king’s wife or son, or of a priest or court official”. The find refutes the long held belief that the Valley of the Kings has little left to discover. According to Weeks: “It’s ironic. A century ago, people said the Valley of the Kings is exhausted, there’s nothing left,” he said. “Suddenly Carter found Tutankhamun. So then they said, ‘Now there’s nothing to find.’ Then we found KV5. Now we have KV63.”

KV63 is located in the area between KV10 (Amenmesse) and KV62 (Tutankhamun), in the very centre of the Valley’s eastern branch and near the main crossroads of the network of paths traversed by thousands of tourists every day. The tomb was found at a depth of some three metres beneath the ground. The burial site is believed to date from the latter portion of the 18th dynasty (ca. 14th century BC), but the occupants have not yet been identified.
